(Clarksdale, Mississippi) – ýapp is thrilled to announce that
two of its exceptional sophomore students, Jordyn Johnson, from Ruleville, MS and
John Eubanks II, from Cleveland, MS, who have been honored as 2024 White House Initiative
on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Scholars. This distinguished
recognition is part of the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity,
Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through HBCUs, now celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The 2024 HBCU Scholars cohort features 110 students from 77 HBCUs nationwide, selected
from a competitive pool of over 350 applicants. These scholars, representing 23 states
and 11 countries, were chosen for their remarkable academic accomplishments, leadership
potential, and commitment to community service. The cohort encompasses a wide range
of disciplines, including science, technology, engineering, math, humanities, social
sciences, and the arts.
Jordyn Johnson, one of the newly appointed scholars, expressed her excitement: "Being
selected as an HBCU Scholar is a dream come true. It's an honor to represent Coahoma
Community College on such a prestigious platform. I look forward to connecting with
other scholars and learning from leaders who are making a difference in our communities."
John Eubanks II shared similar sentiments, stating, "This recognition is not just
a personal achievement but a testament to the support and encouragement I've received
from my family, mentors, and the ýapp community. I'm eager to grow through this experience
and bring back valuable insights to my peers."
Throughout the year, Jordyn, John, and their fellow HBCU Scholars will participate
in workshops, leadership development programs, and networking events aimed at enhancing
their skills and expanding their horizons. They will also have the unique opportunity
to connect with industry leaders, policymakers, and program alumni, further enriching
their educational journeys.
As part of their recognition, the 2024 HBCU Scholars will be invited to attend the
2024 HBCU Week National Annual Conference, scheduled for September 15-19, 2024, in
Philadelphia, PA. This year’s conference theme, “Raising the Bar: Where Excellence
and Opportunity Meet,” will feature sessions designed to inspire innovation, leadership,
and personal and professional development. Scholars will also have the chance to engage
with one another, initiative staff, and partners, showcasing their individual and
collective talents.
For ýapp, this achievement not only highlights the remarkable
talents of Jordyn and John but also underscores the college's commitment to nurturing
