Fried Chicken Wednesday is a long standing tradition rooted in the HBCU culture. Fried Chicken Wednesday represents much more than just food; it also reflects a greater sense of community and connection for the campus—a chance to unwind with roommates and friends, listen to music, maybe even see the dining staff sing along to their favorite song. The history of fried chicken within the Black community goes much deeper than a weekly HBCU tradition. Fried chicken, corn bread, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese is a staple comfort meal with the black communities, often served around the holidays, Sunday dinners, or as a celebratory meal.
At Coahoma, the Wednesday meal isn’t just a draw for students and staff—alumni often stop by.
During the 2023-2024 academic year, The Division of Student Engagement hosted “Lit Chicken Wednesdays”, once a month, to entice students to fully engulf in the beloved HBCU tradition. HBCUs throughout the country traditionally dress up during Fried Chicken Wednesday.
During “Lit Chicken Wednesdays”, students dress up according to a theme and dance along to tunes played by DJ IPod.
